Nick Elwing: URL Project
Nick is currently studying history as a major with a concentration in legal history. He joined the TERM group his sophomore year (2021-2022) and has enjoyed diving deep into the outcomes for students engaging with research at the college level. At Brookfield East High School in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Nick was involved in swimming, cross country, and biological research programs. He also received the National Merit Finalist award.
As a collegiate student, Nick has pursued a path towards pre-law at the University of Alabama. He is currently in the latter half of the Emerging Scholars Program and is intent on continuing to do research for the foreseeable future. Nick enjoys exploring Alabama’s beautiful campus and meeting new people along the way. To this end, he serves as recruitment chair for the Alabama Triathletes on campus. He also serves his community in Wisconsin as an Emergency Medical Technician. He is convinced that by engaging zealously with academics, research, and extracurriculars, he can achieve a fulfilling college career.

Sydney Brennan: AmBT
Sydney Brennan is currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama studying psychology on the pre-medical track. She is a member of the Honors College and has been recognized on the President’s List (semester GPA of 4.0) for both semesters of her freshman year.
Sydney was photographed with a stethoscope to her newborn sister’s chest when she was three years old and fervently insisted that she was going to be a doctor ever since. She volunteered at Sky Ridge Medical Center in her home state of Colorado for five years and accumulated over 500 hours of community service. She guided incoming guests at the information desk, organized patient waiting rooms, pioneered a student volunteer role on the cardiology floor, and became the lead volunteer trainer in the Emergency Room. She continues to volunteer at DCH Regional Hospital’s COVID vaccination clinic in Alabama.
She hopes to incorporate her psychology education on mental health with her work as a physician to provide comprehensive patient care.

Maddy Bley: AmBT
Maddy is a senior at The University of Alabama. She is majoring in Public Health and minoring in Biology to gain a better understanding of community physical and mental well being while examining the social and economic impact of available healthcare. She hopes to attend medical school to be an emergency medicine physician.
Maddy works alongside Drs. Smith and Culmer on the Ambulance Based Telemedicine Research Project and Undergraduate Research Labs (URL) project through TERM (Technology, Education, Research in Medicine).
In addition to her undergraduate research work, Maddy is a part of the Honors College. She has made President’s List (GPA of 4.0 or higher) during her time at Alabama. She is also a DCH volunteer, pediatric medical assistant, and member of Delta Delta Delta. Lastly, Maddy is an Al’s Pals Mentor, and actively works at a local elementary school tutoring third graders.

Reagan McVay: Men in Nursing
I am a sophomore Addiction and Recovery major on the Pre-Medicine track in hopes to become an Addiction Psychiatrist. I am also a part of the STEM to MBA Path and was on the President’s List both semesters during my first year at Alabama. I intern at Our Lady of the Lake Surgical Hospital in Slidell, Louisiana and shadow at Ochsner Health Center in Slidell, Louisiana and soon University Medical Center or DCH in Tuscaloosa. I am a Phi Mu and have a Social Assistant position. I enjoy volunteering at my hometown church and working with children and regularly fundraise and volunteer for UA Miracle and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Children’s of Birmingham. My favorite hobbies are attending Alabama athletic events and hanging out with my dog!

Cheryl Harden
Cheryl Harden is a sophomore at The University of Alabama. She is majoring in Public Health with a concentration in Health Professions. She is on the pre-medical track with plans of becoming a rural medicine physician. Her love and passion for Alabama empowers her to help rural Alabamians obtain better access to healthcare. She has served her communities by completing a community service project through Freshman Forum, where she worked with her peers to create hygiene bags for children in rural Tuscaloosa County. As well, she also volunteers with her churches food bank.
She has remained on the President’s List (4.0 GPA) for both semesters of her freshman year. Cheryl has also received the Alabama Prestige Scholarship. Outside of the classroom, Cheryl plans to gain more experience by volunteering within the Tuscaloosa community. During her freshman year she was involved in The 1956 Magazine, Radical Athlete and Student Oasis Ministry, The Pink Print, Freshman Forum, and in the Emerging Scholars Program. She is also apart of the Alpha Lambda Delta, and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies.
In her free time, she enjoys taking photographs, creating content for her YouTube channel, reading romance novels, and spending time with her family.
