Teaching

I have taught a number of classes over the years at almost level possible including undergraduate, Master’s (MS and MBA), Executive MBA, and PhD.  I believe it is our responsibility to bring a point of view to the classroom but to never be so dogmatic that we believe we somehow know the truth.  This is particularly important for a field like Marketing where there are very few universal laws that can be relied on to guide us. While I enjoy teaching all levels, I have found the greatest satisfaction teaching, and working with, doctoral students.  I have been very fortunate during my short time at Alabama to have worked with a number of wonderful doctoral students.  Seeing their growth over their time here is the most rewarding thing I have done in the years I have been involved in higher education.

Over the years I have had a number of wonderful opportunities to be involved as a leader of study abroad programs in Manchester (UK; 2004, 2006), Belgium (2008), and Perugia (Italy; 2011, 2012).  I have also been a faculty leader yearly on other programs offered by International Business Seminars since 2000.  I have had the opportunity to teach graduate classes at Manchester Business School, Zagreb School of Economics and Management, Barcelona Management Institute, and the Mediterranean School of Business (Tunis, Tunisia).  I have also been involved with or led Executive Education programs for the Stockholm School of Economics (in Riga, Latvia) and in Zagreb (Croatia), Sarajevo, and Belgrade.

Course taught at The University of Alamaba

MKT 690:  Theory Development and UseThis is a doctoral level course that is offered every semester and taken by first year students.  The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding and appreciation for the importance of theory in academic research and to provide them with an overview of various theoretical perspectives.  In addition, since it is a first semester course, time is given to discussing various current issues in social science research as well as how to read/write journal articles.

MKT 518:  Marketing Management and Decision MakingThis is a class in our Executive MBA program and is designed to provide an overview of Marketing with a focus on how marketing managers go about making effective decisions. I have taught this since 2016/2017. I really enjoy teaching this class since, as I tell the students, I learn as much from them as they do from me!

MKT 376:  Service MarketingMKT 487 is our capstone marketing strategy course and is the course I have taught the most over my career by a wide margin. Over the years this class has evolved, at least in my mind, to be more of a decision making in marketing course than one that deals with substantive issues in marketing itself. I have always taught this class using a simulation and used Randy Chapman’s Bandmaps/LINKS for a long time until he retired. Since then I have been using Markstrat.

MKT 376:  Service MarketingThis is an undergraduate course that serves as the first in a sequence of three in our Service Marketing concentration.  The class focuses on the management of the interaction between frontline employees and customers.
