shady Radical

shady R. Radical, CA. M.A., Ph.D., works around issues of preservation in Black performance and production cultures. She earned a Ph.D. from Georgia State University in Moving Image Studies and a Master’s degree in Curatorial Arts and Visual Culture from New York University. Currently, she is the Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Visual Culture at Spelman College and Social Justice 4 Archives Fellow in University of Alabama MLIS program.
While writing, archiving, and curating form the three nodes of her preservation practice, her experience as a key costumer at Tyler Perry Studios ultimately inspired her passion and pursuit of The Radical Archive of Preservation, also known as, T.R.A.P. This community-based preservation initiative allows her to work in dynamic ways between Atlanta’s local arts community and Tanzania’s Bagamoyo rural community. Her dissertation, The Radical Archive of Performance explored the theoretical implications at the intersection between the archive, blackness, and film/tv production culture.

CIS 675: Community-Engaged Scholarship
This project was conducted as part of the 675 (Community Engaged Scholarship) class during Fall 2024. In my Community engaged e-Portfolio (CE-EP), I worked with Heritage Werks in Duluth, Georgia and their community engagement activities in BIPOC and underserved groups in Atlanta, Georgia, and the global archival community.
In my Community Engagement e-Portfolio (CE-eP) I analyze existing communication, information, and preservation offerings of Heritage Werks (HW) for various underserved groups (i.e., BIPOC communities, civil rights activists, and visual and performing artists and companies) within the Atlanta community, but also across the larger archival industry. By identifying existing and potential collaborators and partners in local, regional, national, and international communities in the physical setting and online I facilitate actual and/or planned activities of mutual interest to the company and the community.
