ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project PROMISE is a collaborative partnership between The University of Alabama’s College of Education, the School of Social Work, and the Tuscaloosa City School (TCS) system.
This five-year federally funded initiative aims to train and place 40 master’s-level school-based mental health practitioners, specifically school counselors and social workers, to serve K–12 students in high-needs school districts.
The mission of Project PROMISE centers on enhancing the capabilities of high-needs school districts to offer school-based mental health services. This enhancement is supported through an interdisciplinary approach, aligning the nationally accredited programs offered at The University of Alabama. The School of Social Work, accredited by CSWE, and the College of Education’s School Counseling Program, accredited by CACREP, work together to strengthen the education system’s capacity to meet student mental health needs.
Benefits to project scholars include full tuition support, a stipend, and academic advising to ensure timely completion of their program of study, including field experience at a high-needs school within the Tuscaloosa City System. See the Project Description and Scholarship & Eligibility sections for more information.
Project PROMISE also includes a one-week Summer Institute hosted at The University of Alabama. This institute provides focused professional development in school-based mental health, emphasizing the practical and interdisciplinary aspects of the field. More details can be found in the Summer Institute section.
