About Dr. Murphy

Dr. Michael Murphy is a cultural anthropologist with research interests in the ethnography of Hispanic peoples, religion, psychological anthropology, social anthropology, onomastics, education, and the anthropology of protected landscapes. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara and M.A., C.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Diego, all in Anthropology. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Jamaica, Mexico and California, but his major focus of interest is southern Spain.
Prof. Murphy has served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Political and Legal Anthropology, the Editorial Board of Mythosphere and the Board of Trustees of the Centro de Estudios Rocieros (Center for Rocío Studies) of southern Spain. He is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish journal, Exvoto. In 2001 he was named Distinguished Teaching Fellow of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Alabama. From 2003 to 2013, Murphy served as chair of the Anthropology Department and in 2012 he received the inaugural Jim Salem Chair Award. He retired to Professor Emeritus status from UA on January 1, 2016.
