About Dr. Kris Hoang

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Accounting with a Minor in French Studies (2003) and my Masters of Accounting (2004) from the University of Waterloo. I am a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA-CA Ontario), and I worked in Assurance & Advisory Services at Deloitte in Toronto before pursuing my academic career. I received my Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting (2012) from the University of Alberta.

I worked as an assistant professor at Tulane University in New Orleans from 2012 to 2016, then in 2016 became an assistant professor at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy. In 2024, I had a sabbatical appointment as visiting professor at the University of Antwerp.

My lifelong interest in learning about accounting began when, at the age of 6, I got in the habit of invoicing my parents for my weekly allowance (as justification for greater amounts when I completed more chores) and maintaining detailed records of financial accumulation in my piggy bank. I am fortunate to have followed this path all the way through to higher education and share the journey with my spouse, Quoc Hoang, Director of Experiential Learning for the Culverhouse College of Business. We enjoy living in Tuscaloosa and cheering “Roll Tide!” with our daughter (these were among her first words).
