Unraveling the mechanics of directional coarsening in single crystal Ni-based superalloys via laser peening: Insights from experimental characterization and microstructural analysis

Surface treatment techniques, like laser peening, enhance the longevity of Ni-based superalloy components by reinforcing their microstructure against surface-initiated damage. Recent findings suggest that these methods may also influence precipitate coarsening behavior at high temperatures, leading to rafting phenomena. This study extensively examined γ’ rafting in single crystal Ni-based superalloy CMSX-4 post laser peening and heat treatment. X-ray diffraction revealed surface compressive stresses (-400 MPa to -800 MPa), transitioning to tensile stresses at greater depths before returning to an unstressed state. Correlation with electron microscopy indicated horizontal coarsening in compressive regions and vertical coarsening in tensile regions due to misfit and residual stresses aiding diffusion…”

The effects of laser peening on the oxidation behavior of pure titanium at 750 ° C

“Pure titanium and titanium alloys are essential materials for structural applications due to their high specific strength and corrosion resistance. However, at temperatures above 550–600 °C, an unprotective oxide layer forms, promoting oxygen diffusion and degradation of material properties. Enhancement of titanium’s oxidation resistance lies in creating a stable and protective oxide layer on its surface which can be achieved through controlled manufacturing, microalloying, or post processing via surface engineering treatments. High-velocity laser accelerated deposition (HVLAD): An experimental study

“A versatile solid-state cladding technique named high-velocity laser accelerated deposition (HVLAD), which is capable of creating highly uniform coverage on various surfaces, is reported here. The method is a non-thermally driven, mechanically based process that relies on laser peening (LP) technology which has been used for commercial applications for decades. In HVLAD, a high-intensity laser is used to accelerate, propel, and deposit small areas of a thin film in a controlled step-by-step manner onto a substrate.
