Traditional Bachelor’s Degree Pathway (Class-B)
(for students leaving high school or transferring from a community college)
Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s Degree Pathway
(for students leaving high school with college credits such as AP or dual enrollment and a strong ACT score; decisions made once 60-80 total credits are completed)
Alternative Master’s Degree Pathway (Class-Alt-A)
(for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree seeking initial mathematics teaching license for grades 6-12)
Mathematics Teachers seeking an advanced degree for practicing teachers may seek either a traditional Master’s Degree or the Educational Specialist Degree
Traditional Master’s Degree (Class-A License)
(for educators with a teaching license in secondary mathematics grades 6-12, Class-B undergraduate level certification)
Educational Specialist Degree (Class-AA License)
(for educators with a teaching license in secondary mathematics grades 6-12, Class-A level master’s level certification)
Educators seeking a Doctoral Degree have two programs to consider and varies based on a the objectives for earning the degree
Doctor of Education (EdD, PhD)
Doctoral Degrees in Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Alabama are offered with an concentration in Mathematics Education. All perspective applicants are encouraged to contact program faculty to answer questions about our doctoral degrees.
The doctoral degree program is the highest professional degree and is designed primarily for top-level education practitioners and university researchers. The College offers both Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees. Programs at the doctoral level are designed to prepare advanced practitioners for school positions or for professorships in institutions of higher education, among other professional careers in education sectors.
The Ph.D. is primarily for educators who intend to become researchers in their given field, while the Ed.D. is for educators who intend to become highly skilled practitioners and school leaders. Normally, three years of teaching experience are required to enter either of the programs, though every applicant is considered based on prior expertise and career experiences.
