Coastal Hydrology Lab

The Latest from the Lab

August 12-13, 2024

CHL’s members recently attended the BRIGHTE 2024 Workshop at NSF NCAR in Boulder, Colorado, and it proved to be a valuable experience.
The workshop focused on the critical issue of hurricane and storm surge flooding, offering deep insights into improving risk communication through geo-visualization and geospatial storytelling. The sessions on Esri technologies, such as ArcGIS StoryMaps, dashboards, and ArcGIS Online Experience Builder, were particularly enlightening, equipping CHL’s members with practical tools to better convey complex data. The event also provided an excellent opportunity for CHL’s members to connect with professionals dedicated to enhancing coastal resilience. The exchange of ideas and strategies with fellow participants was as impactful as the formal sessions.

Costal Hydrology Lab Members Selected for 2024 BRIGHT workshop

July 06, 2024

We are delighted to announce that Soheil, Georgios and Faezeh from the Coastal Hydrology Lab have been selected to participate in the esteemed 2024 BRIGHTE workshop, “Exploring Coastal Resilience and Flood Risk through Geospatial Storytelling.” This significant event is organized by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and will be held in Boulder, Colorado, on August 12-13.

Had another great stakeholder engagement experience! As part of our NBS project, we’re collaborating with modeling, ecological, and social teams to develop compound flood models in conjunction with end-users, ensuring that our results are actionable and relevant. This workshop provided an excellent platform for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of valuable insights, thanks to the support of NOAA and UA CIROH. We’re excited about the promising outcomes and innovative products that will stem from this initiative. Stay tuned for more updates!

In an inspiring display of scientific outreach and collaboration, members of the Coastal Hydrology Lab participated in the Scientific Research and Education Network (SciREN) Alabama event in 2024. This annual gathering, known for bridging the gap between research scientists and educators, offered an excellent platform for our lab members to showcase their research. In addition, they could engage with K-12 educators from across the region.
Our lab’s participation in SciREN Alabama demonstrates our commitment to community engagement and the sharing of scientific knowledge. Lab members presented their research on Impact of Sea Level Rise and Compound flooding in coastal areas. They focused on topics such as What compound flooding is, what are its causes, the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and etc.

New Study Reveals Increase in Extreme Coastal Flooding Due to Warming Climate
We are excited to share that our recent research, demonstrating the rise of extreme coastal flooding in a warming climate, has been published in the esteemed journal Earth’s Future. The study, led by Georgios Boumis, in collaboration with Hamid Moradkhani from the University of Alabama’s College of Engineering, highlights the significant impact of climate change on coastal flood frequency.
The research indicates that what were once considered 100-year floods could occur annually by the end of the 21st century. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for adaptive measures to mitigate the risks associated with rising sea levels and increased storm intensity.
Our findings emphasize the importance of developing resilient coastal infrastructure and implementing effective flood management strategies to protect vulnerable communities.
