The Digital Literacy in the Core initiative is designed to expand student access to courses that teach digital literacy in the core curriculum, thereby supporting the “Digital Literacy” Pathway. While demand for digital skills is high, our current core curriculum does not have enough Humanities (HU) and Social and Behavioral Sciences (SB) courses to meet projected enrollment needs.
To address this, the Office for General Education supports faculty and departments who wish to develop or integrate digital literacy components into new or existing HU and SB core courses. Participating faculty fellows receive $1,000 in professional development support and expert guidance from the UA Teaching Academy and the Alabama Digital Humanities Center. Faculty work together in the fall semester to develop course curricula to be included in the next year’s catalogue.
The Digital Literacy in the Core Initiative is supported by the Office for General Education and the Office of Academic Affairs.
Faculty Fellow Participation Requirements:
- Interested faculty should:
- Be full-time faculty of any standing who are teaching HU or SB core courses.
- Commit to attending 4-5 curriculum-development workshops in Fall semester.
- Be willing to teach the proposed course at least 5 times in the next 7 years.
- Interested departments should:
- Identify a new or existing HU or SB core course that could be developed to meet the course eligibility requirements and student learning outcomes for the Digital Literacy Pathway.
- Nominate faculty who will teach the chosen HU or SB core course and who have an interest in digital literacy and course development.
Faculty and Department chairs interested in participating should contact Dr. Margaret Peacock, Director of the Digital Literacy in the Core Initiative, at mepeacock@ua.edu.
