Building Digital Fluency at the Core

Students and faculty are demanding more integration of digital skills into the University of Alabama’s Core Curriculum, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. The Digital Literacy in the Core Initiative is driven by a desire to develop student familiarity and functional skills in the use of digital tools, and in understanding the impact of the digital revolution on the modern world. This Initiative also supports the development of the Digital Literacy and Practice Pathway, which is offered through the Office for General Education.

The Digital Literacy in the Core Initiative provides expert training and assistance in the development of digital pedagogies to faculty teaching Humanities and Social Science courses in the Core Curriculum at the University of Alabama.

Each year, 15 faculty fellows participate in a fall workshop that provides assistance in developing HU (humanities) and SB (Social and Behavioral Science) Core courses that teach digital literacy, broadly conceived. Faculty fellows receive a $1000 stipend from the Office of Academic Affairs, and instruction from experts in the field. Faculty fellows are nominated by their department chair. All full-time faculty are eligible to participate. ALL faculty, regardless of whether they are fellows in the DL in the Core Initiative, are welcome to participate in the workshops.
