VO2max

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) assessment is the gold standard determination of cardiorespiratory fitness and is related to aerobic exercise performance. Workloads associated with given percentages of VO2max can be used to set exercise intensity. Graded exercise tests to determine VO2max can be conducted on either a stationary bike or treadmill.

Basic VO2max – Maximal aerobic capacity will be measured.

Advanced VO2max assessment includes the same test as the VO2max assessment but also includes measurement of ventilatory threshold (similar to lactate threshold; can be used to determine the exercise intensity that can be sustained for a prolonged period) and peak blood lactate concentration after exercise. This information can be used to support whether a true maximal effort was given.

Advanced VO2max – Maximal aerobic capacity will be measured; ventilatory threshold will be estimated based on VO2max test data; and 5-minute post-exercise lactate will be measured.
