Community Outreach

• Presented tutorial lectures on nanotechnology and semiconductor materials for a NSF-funded summer workshop at UA, in which the science and engineering faculty from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) were assisted in developing lecture examples and experiments for use in their teaching.
• Participated in the “NanoBio Science Partnership for the Alabama Black Belt” program by developing scientific modules on nanotechnology and renewable energy for training teachers from secondary schools in Alabama.
• Demonstrated scientific modules: “The Power of Nano – Size Effect”,  “How Catalyst Works – Improving Performance with Nano-Scale Structures in Water Splitting”, “ABCs of Nano”, “Color Magic”, “Power Generation from Renewable Energy”, and “Big Science from the Small World –Understanding Atomic Structure with 3D Visualization” in the SECME Summer Institute and to secondary school teachers from minority and economically disadvantaged public schools in Alabama. All these modules are well accepted and used in science class at middle schools.
• Supervised high school students through the MINT school summer program. Two students won the Best Presentation Award and the Best Poster Award from the MINT center.
