David L. Albright, PhD

I am a University Distinguished Professor and a professor of Political Science at The University of Alabama, where I focus on advancing the health, well-being, and prosperity of underserved populations, rural communities, and our nation’s Veterans. My work is guided by a deep commitment to service, stewardship, and strengthening Alabama’s communities.

As Principal Investigator for VitAL, a statewide initiative improving services, policies, and community conditions for Alabamians facing mental health, substance use, and trauma challenges, VitAL partners with community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders in all 67 counties of Alabama, ensuring that our solutions are locally informed and impactful.

My leadership extends beyond academia to serving as a board director of the DCH Healthcare Authority, which plays a vital role in the health and well-being of West Alabama, and as chair of the City of Northport’s Healthcare Subcommittee. I advise on healthcare strategies that enhance quality of life, reduce costs, and drive economic development. I am proud to serve as board president of the Alabama Rural Health Association, supporting affordable, quality healthcare for Alabama’s rural communities. Additionally, I contribute to national conversations as a director of the National Association for Rural Mental Health and as a gubernatorial appointee to the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council.

Previously, I served on the board of the Alabama Balance of State Continuum of Care, and as an ex officio director of the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority, supporting efforts to attract businesses and good-paying jobs to our region. Nationally, I have advised the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the RAND Corporation, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on policies to strengthen Veteran health, rural resilience, and addiction and mental health.

As a military Veteran, my commitment to those who have served our nation runs deep. I am honored to serve on the Veterans Rural Health Advisory Committee, addressing the unique challenges of rural Veterans, at the appointment of the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Faith, family, and service are at the heart of my life. Recently, I received the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award for distinguished service from the Boy Scouts of America. I live in Tuscaloosa with my four daughters, including my oldest, who is a proud student at The University of Alabama. I am committed to building a stronger, healthier Alabama for future generations.
