CORROSION IN COLD SPRAY DEPOSITION

Cold spray deposition is a promising repair technology for damaged or failed components. In cold spray of metallic materials, powdered feedstock below the its melting temperature is accelerated towards a substrate at supersonic velocities, where bonding occurs via explosive welding. This process results in unique and complex microstructures that are significantly different than traditionally manufactured alloys. Our group investigates the mechanistic relationships between the cold spray deposit structure and environmental performance.

Alloys investigated include:

  • 7xxx-Series Aerospace Aluminum Alloys
  • 5xxx-Series Marine Aluminum Alloys
  • Austenitic and Ferritic Stainless Steel
  • High-Strength Steel
