Teaching Philosophy
I believe that information must be conveyed to students in a variety of ways and in our field, it is particularly important to include an interactive component. I believe in telling, showing, demonstrating, and engaging students with the material, reinforcing the concepts that I am trying to teach in more ways than one. Applying the information in exercises, quizzes, and small team projects in class seems to help students understand and retain the information better. I also believe in sharing real world experiences and explaining why the information is important which inspires students to think creatively and pursue design passionately.

Team Luminaire
Students work together in teams of four to design and build a luminaire for a hotel corridor to reinforce a lesson on optical control.

Team Luminaire
Example of a luminaire built from foam core board, trash paper, aluminum foil for a reflector and a CFL for the lamp.

Color & Light
Students go through a series of exercises in teams to ascertain how light affects the color of materials.
