Have an adventure! Get College Credit!

*Note: The UA Camino program also has a 1-credit hour course prerequisite that is offered through the University of Alabama Rec Center in the Spring of 2024. This is a training course that all students must pass in order to be cleared for the Camino trip.

All Students take TWO courses while on the Camino in the Summer I term:

All Students Will Take:

HY305 / SP 488 : The History of Medieval Spain (can be taken for History OR Spanish Credit) (3 credit hours)

  • Taught by Dr. Juan Ponce Vazquez. This course will give a deeper historical context to the Camino by placing it in the rich and complex history of Medieval Spain. Students will literally walk through this history as they study it. Students have the option to take this course as a 300-level Spanish immersion course, which will require them to complete assignments in Spanish and engage with each other and the community in Spanish.

Students Will Then Choose to Take ONE of the Following Courses:

HY307 / REL 372 : Pilgrimage and The Search for Happiness (Can be taken for History or Religious Studies Credit) (3 credit hours)

  • Taught by Dr. Margaret Peacock. This course will explore the long history and transformative experience of the pilgrimage. It will urge students to navigate why people have gone on this journey for so many years, what the pilgrimage means to humans across time and space, why they are embarking on this adventure, and what the experience means to them. Students have the option to take this as a Religious Studies course.

OR
NEW300 : Outdoor Adventure Leadership (3 credit hours)

  • Taught by Dr. Margaret Peacock. This course will explore the challenges and rewards of leading a group on a month-long outdoor adventure trip. Students enrolled in this class will function as group leaders while studying group cohesion practices, conflict resolution, first aid and injury remediation, motivation practices, and leadership pacing. Students studying in the Physical Fitness and Leadership fields need to speak to their advisor if they wish to request that this course count towards their Major.
