ABOUT US
What is the plan and who is in charge?
The University of Alabama program to hike the Camino de Santiago is directed by Dr. Margaret Peacock and Dr. Juan Ponce Vazquez. They are both professors of History at Bama and have hiked the Camino. Dr. Peacock is a lifelong alpinist and long distance thru hiker who is writing her next book on the history of the pilgrimage. She has run outdoor programs with Outward Bound and has Wilderness Education Association (WEA 6+1): Outdoor Leadership Certification and Nantahala Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS): Wilderness First Responder Certification. Dr. Ponce Vazquez is a native of Seville, Spain and an avid hiker who works on the history of Early Modern Spain and Empire.
There are many universities that run summer programs on the Camino. Unlike most of those programs, this one runs for a full month, covering the majority of the Camino’s most famous route, the Camino Frances. Students will live the history of the place as they learn it and will have a chance to make lifelong friendships.
